Research travels and meetings:

Planning and preparation meetings, October 2009 (Bo Larsson).

This journey had three purposes:

(1) To present the former research project Multi-ethnic Cultural Built Heritage in West Ukraine and Moldova. A Challenge for Urban Planning. (2) To gather supplementary information for a popular book, based on the finished research project. (Published in Swedish in 2011.)
(3) To discuss two new research project plans: The memory of vanished population groups in today´s East- and Central European urban environments. Memory treatment and urban planning in L’viv, Černivci, Chişinău and Wrocław. And Literature and Cityscape. Urban Identity in East Central Europe.

Vienna, Oct. 16. Meeting with prof. Alois Woldan and Marina Döhring-Williams concerning project idea: Literature and Cityscape. Urban Identity in East Central Europe.
Uzhhorod, Oct. 17. Meeting with Igor Brody and Peter Szarvas. Presenting the former project.
Chernivtsi, Oct. 18 – 20. Meetings with Serhij Osachuk, Ihor Zhaloba, Olexandr Masan, Natalia Shevchenko, Lev Feldmann, Stepan Melnychuk (rector), Iryna Korotun, Vladimir Kushnir, Olena Pushkova and Svitlana Bilenkova, presenting the former project and discussing the new project idea. Also meeting with Olexandra Shcherbanyuk at the “Municipal library” and with Elias Gulinsky, and old German man from Chertnivtsi, who had to emigrate in 1940 and was visiting his childhood town.
Chişinău, Oct. 23 – 25. Meetings with Varvara Buzila, Eugen Bâzgu, Boris Focşa (Minister of Culture), Mihai Ursu, Mariana Şlapac, Sergius Ciocanu, Dorin Lozovanu, Ghenadie Ivaşcenco, Anatolie Gordeev, Tamara Nesterov, Alexei Sainciuc and Iurie Colesnic. Presentation of the old project (at the 120 anniversary of the Museum of Ethnography and Nature History) and discussion of the new project idea. Also visit to Soroca and Balti.
L´viv, Oct. 27 – 30. Meeting with Yuri Kryvorichko (City architect), Serhiy Kiral (Economic planner, City Hall), with Halina Petryshyn, Olha Kryvoruchko, Mykola Bevz, Yulia Idak, Vitaly Shulyar and Marianna Pryjma at the Faculty of Architecture and with Tarik Cyril Amar, Sofia Dyak and Iryna Matsevko at L’vivcenter. Presenting the old project and discussing the new project idea. Meeting with Andriy Shulyar, architect, aged 91, father of Vitaly Shulyar. Excursion to Brody, meeting with Mayor Bohdan Semchuk and director of the Museum of History, Vasily Strilchuk. Presentation of the old project and discussion about the project idea: Literature and Cityscape. Urban Identity in East Central Europe.

Wrocław, Nov. 25-26, Bo Larsson. Lecture at the conference Architecture without borders. Meeting with Barbara Pabjan, Paweł Czajkowski, Marcelina Zuber and Stanisław Kłopot at the University and with Elzbieta Przesmycka, Elzbieta Trocka-Lesczyńska, Joanna Jabłońska and Łukasz Netczuk at the Faculty of Architecture about the new project idea.

Chişinău, March 20 – 22, Bo Larsson, Anamaria Dutceac Segesten. Meeting with Varvara Buzila, Eugen Bâzgu, Tamara Nesterov, Anatolie Gordeev and Sergius Ciocanu. Also meeting with Alexandru Corduneanu and Ghenadie Şonţu from the NGO for preserving cultural heritage and with Irina Shihova, leader of the Jewish museum, and Ghenadie Ivaşcenco from the City Hall.
Chernivtsi, March 24 – 26. Bo Larsson, Eleonora Narvselius, Julia Lienemeyer, Niklas Bernsand, Anamaria Dutceac Segesten (only March 24). Meetings with Stepan Melnychuk (rector), Tamara Marusyk, Iryna Korotun, Svitlana Bilenkova, Mykola Kushnir, Petro Rykhlo, Olena Pushkova, Ihor Puddubny, Vasyl Kholodnyts’ky and Maria Nykyrsa. Also meetings with Benjamin Grilj, editing the book Black Milk, with letters from Jewish deportees in Transnistria in World War II and his wife Irina Grilj. We also had a meeting at the Polish National House with representatives of nationalities: Władysław Strutyński (Pole), Mr. Neiland (German), Josif Bursuk and Lev Feldmann (Jewish). Josif Bursuk later showed us a working synagogue and the ghetto, which he survived as a child. We also met Natalia Shevchenko at the Jewish museum and Olexandra Shcherbanyuk at the “Municipal Library”.

Meeting at the Faculty of Architecture, also with Bohdan Cherkes (dean). Also meeting with Meilakh Sheikhet (American-Ukrainian L´viv based Bureau on Human Rights and Rule of Law), Yuri Kryvoruchko (city architect), Olha Kryvoruchko and Ada Dyanova (All-American Jewish Charitable Foundation Hesed-Arieh). Meeting at the Polish cultural organisation.

Israel (Tel-Aviv & Jaffa), June 10-13, Bo Larsson. Interviews with 10 Jewish persons with memories from interwar years and World War II in L´viv and Chernivtsi.
